Lesson 9: Detailed outline
Lesson #9: Chair 4 — The Disciple-Maker (Abiding & Spiritual Reproduction)
Lesson Overview
In this lesson, we complete our study of Chair 3 (The Worker) by applying Paul’s 4 Health Check criteria from Ephesians 4, and then step onto the highest terrain of the discipleship landscape: Chair 4: The Disciple-Maker.
Leading out from John 15:1–8 and 2 Timothy 2:2, we will explore how spiritual fruitfulness is not created by human effort or religious busyness, but flows naturally from an abiding connection to Jesus Christ. We will define God’s biblical "measuring stick"—the 3 Layers of Fruit—and examine the shift from spiritual addition to spiritual multiplication.
Section 1: Completing the Health Check for Chair 3
Before looking at Chair 4, we must evaluate whether our ministry labor in Chair 3 is functioning in health or driving toward exhaustion. In Ephesians 4:15–16, Paul provides four concrete criteria for a worker "working properly":
-
Truth Married to Love (v. 15a): Uncompromising biblical truth delivered with radical, Christlike grace—avoiding both harsh legalism and spineless compromise.
-
Direct Alignment with the Head (v. 15b): Serving out of deep, personal allegiance to King Jesus rather than organizational pressure or people-pleasing.
-
Functional Interdependence ("Every Joint") (v. 16a): Rejecting the "lone ranger" mindset by recognizing that every member is a vital joint connected to and dependent on the rest of the body.
-
Mutually Building Up in Love (v. 16b): Healthy spiritual labor produces life, unity, and genuine love across the community, rather than friction and burnout.
Section 2: God's Observation Lens (Introducing Chair 4)
Primary Passages: John 15:1–8 & 2 Timothy 2:2
"I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing... By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples." — John 15:5, 8
"And what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men, who will be able to teach others also." — 2 Timothy 2:2
Key Scriptural Observations:
-
The Posture of Abiding (John 15:5): Chair 4 is not about trying harder or doing more work; it is about sinking so deep into Christ that His life, character, and love naturally overflow into others.
-
Spiritual Multiplication (2 Timothy 2:2): Paul outlines four generations of disciple-making: Paul $\rightarrow$ Timothy $\rightarrow$ Faithful Men $\rightarrow$ Others Also. True Chair 4 ministry reproduces disciples who reproduce.
Section 3: The Measuring Stick — The 3 Layers of Biblical Fruit
In John 15:8, Jesus states that bearing "much fruit" proves we are His disciples. Scripturally, this fruit manifests in three distinct layers:
-
Layer 1: Internal Fruit — Christlike Character (Galatians 5:22–23):
The Root: Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Before God produces fruit through us, He produces transformation in us.
-
Layer 2: External Fruit — Transformed Conduct (Colossians 1:10 & Hebrews 13:15):
The Work: Practical good works, tangible generosity, speaking truth, and praising God amidst life's trials.
-
Layer 3: Reproductive Fruit — Spiritual Children (Romans 1:13 & 2 Timothy 2:2):
The Multiplication: Individuals who are knowing, trusting, and following Jesus more closely because of your personal investment.
Section 4: The Shift — Chair 3 vs. Chair 4
-
Chair 3 (The Worker): Asks, "What am I doing for God?" $\rightarrow$ Powered by gifts, labor, and activity $\rightarrow$ Results in spiritual addition (tasks completed, programs run).
-
Chair 4 (The Disciple-Maker): Asks, "Who is Christ reproducing through me?" $\rightarrow$ Powered by abiding intimacy and spiritual overflow $\rightarrow$ Results in spiritual multiplication (disciples making disciples).
Section 5: The Mirror Lens (Personal Humility)
Before looking outward, we must evaluate our own fruitfulness:
-
In Me: "Is the Holy Spirit growing more love, patience, and gentleness in my heart this year than last year?"
-
Through Me: "Is my daily life producing tangible acts of love, service, and praise to God?"
-
From Me: "Who is in my life that I am personally helping to know, trust, and follow Jesus?"
Section 6: The Window Lens (Strategic Love & Action)
How do we strategically step into Chair 4 disciple-making?
-
Shift from Addition to Multiplication: Measure spiritual progress by the depth of spiritual investment in specific individuals rather than event attendance or church busyness.
-
Invite Others Into Your Abiding Life: Disciple-making in Chair 4 isn't just delivering a curriculum—it is letting someone see how you pray, process trials, study God's Word, and serve.
Personal Reflection for the Week
God does not multiply our programs or our busyness—He only multiplies an abiding life. Where is God inviting you to stop striving in your own strength and simply abide in the Vine this week?
