Mini-series: The Hardened Heart

Lesson A: The Process of Calcification

The Core Concept: Hardening is not a sudden event; it is a "partnership" between a resistant human will and a judicial divine response.

I. The GPS in Pharaoh’s Court

  • The Context: Pharaoh wasn’t ignorant; he had the best "satellite reception" in the world through Moses and the Plagues.

  • The "Recalculating" Prompts: Each plague was a Divine GPS prompt to "Turn Around."

  • The Shift: * Plagues 1–5: The text says Pharaoh "hardened his own heart." He hit the Mute button.

    • Plagues 6–10: The text shifts. "The Lord hardened Pharaoh’s heart." God locked the volume at the level Pharaoh chose.

II. The Chemistry of Calcification

  • Making Provision: Every time we ignore the "Umpire" (Peace), we add a layer of sediment to the heart.

  • The Point of No Return: When the "sediment" of our excuses becomes "concrete." God eventually ratifies our choice, granting us the "freedom" to be exactly who we insisted on being.

III. The Warning Sign: "The Deceitfulness of Sin" (Hebrews 3:13)

  • Sin doesn’t tell you it’s hardening you. It tells you it’s "protecting" you or "pleasuring" you.

  • Exit Ramp: Exhortation. We need "the Voice from behind" (others in the body) to tell us when our GPS is on mute.

Lesson A (Part 2) Outline: The Tale of Two Kings

I. The Road Conditions: The Silence of the "Muted" Year

  • Talking Point: David wasn't "fine"; he was in "Adversity" (Isaiah 30:20).

  • Scripture: Psalm 32:3-4. The "fever" of a muted GPS.

II. The External Alarm: The Role of the Prophet

  • The Pharaoh Encounter: Moses as the persistent warning (Exodus 7-10).

  • The David Encounter: Nathan as the "Word behind thee" (2 Samuel 12).

  • Concept: When we won't listen to the internal prompt, God often sends an "External Watchman" to break the silence.

III. The Point of Impact: Diamond vs. Dust

  • Pharaoh’s Diamond Heart: Every plague was a hammer blow that made the stone harder. (Obstinacy).

  • David’s Dust Heart: One sentence from Nathan pulverized the stone. (Contrition).

  • Scripture: Psalm 51:17. The "Shatter Point."

IV. The "Old Paths" Conclusion: Hearing the Teacher

  • The Landing: In the Old Testament, they had to wait for a Prophet to show up. In the New Testament, the Teacher is already speaking.

  • Challenge: "Are you waiting for a 'Nathan' to show up at your door, or will you listen to the 'Internal Recalculating' prompt today?"

Lesson B: The Silence of the Watchman

The Core Concept: The most dangerous state a human can reach is not being "in sin," but being "in sin and feeling perfectly fine."

I. The Terminology of the Terminal

  • The Seared Conscience (1 Timothy 4:2): Like scar tissue that has no nerve endings. You can no longer feel the "heat" of the fever (conviction).

  • The Reprobate Mind (Romans 1:28): God "gives them over." He stops saying "Recalculating" and lets the driver go off the cliff if that is what they have consistently chosen.

II. The Strong Delusion (2 Thessalonians 2:10-12)

  • This is the "Terminal Anatomy." Because they "received not the love of the truth," they eventually become incapable of recognizing the truth.

  • The Anatomy Result: The Internal Watchman is now silent. The Umpire has left the field.

III. The Hope of the "Fleshy Heart" (Ezekiel 36:26)

  • The Great Promise: God is the only surgeon who can perform a "Heart Transplant."

  • The Final Diagnostic: If you are worried your heart is hard, it isn’t. A hard heart doesn’t care. A hard heart doesn't ask questions.

  • Closing Illustration: The Thief on the Cross. His "GPS" was active until his very last breath.
