I don't know about you, but I often feel like somebody else is in control of what happens to me every day. I'm not a control freak by any means, but I don't want life to happen TO me. I would much prefer if I had some control over life. Is that realistic? What does God tell us about that?
First of all, God tells us not to worry about it! Matthew .6:31-34 tells us, "...so don't worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring its own worries. Today's trouble is enough for today." Our focus shouldn't be on the future but today. Whew! That narrows things down a bit! That reminds me of the recovery saying of "One day at a time..."
Notice however, that God hasn't absolved us of all responsibility. We are to be concerned about today. Our focus needs to be on the present. But.... specifically, what are we to FOCUS on? Colossians 3:2 gives us some direction. "Think about the things of heaven, not the things of earth...." What does that mean?! Here are some thoughts on that:
Meaning of "Things Above"
-
- Jesus’ Reign & Presence: Focusing on where Christ is seated in power.
- Eternal Perspective: Valuing things that last forever (God’s kingdom) over temporary, fleeting earthly matters.
- Godly Characteristics: Emphasizing love, truth, and spiritual wisdom over selfish ambition.
- Heavenly Blessings: Meditating on the peace and spiritual rewards provided by God rather than material possessions.
How do I do that?
How to Focus on "Things Above"
- Daily Transformation: Allowing the Holy Spirit to renew the mind and resisting worldly desires.
- Scriptural Immersion: Letting the Word of Christ dwell within you, guiding daily decisions.
- Active Gratitude: Cultivating a heart of thanksgiving to God.
- Spiritual Prioritization: Actively seeking righteousness and prioritizing spiritual growth over earthly worries.
How do I put it into practice?
Practical Application
- Replacing Worry: Replacing anxious thoughts about the world with trust in God's promises.
- Resetting Focus: Actively choosing to think about heavenly goals whenever caught up in lower-level, stressful thinking.
- Serving Others: Treating others with a Christ-like attitude and serving them.
